报告摘要:

In this talk, I will present some of our latest research results in the generation of controllable spin density distribution within an optical focal spot beyond the diffraction limit. Using a time-reversal approach, the required pupil field for the generation of arbitrary spin orientation at the optical focus can be found analytically. Moreover, it can be shown that the focal field produced this way has a volume size beyond the classical diffraction limit. With this method, the spin orientation within the focal spot can be arbitrarily tuned. A very special situation arises when the spin orientation becomes orthogonal to the optical axis direction. Such an optical field with purely transverse spin density is called “photonic wheel”. Experimental realization of the calculated pupil field illumination will be presented. Applications of optical focal spots with different spin density orientation will also be briefly discussed.

报告人简介:

Dr. Qiwen Zhan is Professor of Electro-Optics and Electrical & Computer Engineering, Director of the Nano Electro-Optics Laboratories, and Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Research Center at the University of Dayton. He received BS in physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1996 and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2002. Prof. Zhan’s research has attracted more than $4M as PI and more than $7M as co-PI. He has published 1 book, 7 book chapters, more than 150 journal and conference publications, delivered many conference presentations and invited talks/lectures/seminars, and possessed 6 US patents/patent applications. Dr. Zhan is a member of the Editorial Board for Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), Topical Editor for Applied Optics (OSA), Guest Editor for Optics Express (OSA), Special Symposium Chair of CLEO and Chair of the Polarization Technical Group of the OSA. Prof. Zhan is elected Fellow of the OSA and Fellow of the SPIE. He is also a senior member of the IEEE, IEEE Photonics Society and a member of the AAAS.
